Fair Credit Cards FAQS

February 25, 2017
As a rule, your credit limit is based on your creditworthiness and your credit score. However, some credit cards do not offer a high credit limit to anyone, no matter how good your credit is. Store credit cards tend to have low credit limits. If you'd like a credit card with a higher limit, you should consider applying for a regular credit card – not a store card. But before you apply, check your credit reports to see if and how your credit score's changed after you got the Overstock card. Having good credit will make a big difference in how much credit you're given. The best way to get a high credit score is to always pay your credit card monthly bill on time, every month.

Many cards will look at your Vantage score which is basically a combination of all three credit bureaus. However, I could not tell you for sure how they decide, therefore I can't tell you if you would be approved for their card. I can tell you that applying for a credit card usually results in a hard pull on your credit reports. This can cause a dent in your score. It sounds like you are credit conscious so I am sure you do not want to risk lowering your credit score any further. You are better off applying for a card that caters to your type of credit. In this case, check under the fair credit tab to see suitable options.

There is no set in stone number because a lot of different factors are considered when you close a card. Most important are credit utilization ratio and card’s age. If it is the oldest credit card in your credit portfolio, the average age of your credit will become shorter and your credit will go a bit down. Also, calculate how your credit utilization ratio will look after you close the card. If it will be above 30%, your credit score may drop significantly.  If you do not plan to use the card you want to close, and it does not have an annual fee or any other fees, think of keeping it open just to keep your credit score high.

You can contact your current credit card issuers and request for a credit limit increase. It won’t hurt your credit score as much as opening a new credit card because the average age of your credit accounts won’t change. If your creditors do not raise your credit limits, then you can apply for a new credit card. When you apply for a credit card it is inevitable that your credit score will be lowered. But that is not what cannot be improved. On-time minimum payments with all your creditors during 3-6 months will raise your scores back if not improve.
