Discover’s cash back bonus categories change every quarter, allowing cardholders to consistently have the opportunity to earn elevated cash back. What’s important is that Discover includes categories that most people can use.

The Discover categories for the fourth quarter of 2024 are just right for shoppers looking to kick off the holiday gift-giving season or simply stock up on household necessities. Now, from October 1 to December 31, you can earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 at Amazon.com and Target when you activate.

To earn elevated rewards each quarter, you first have to activate the offer online or through the Discover app. You’ll be able to activate the bonus categories up to a month in advance and anytime during the quarter.

Once activated, you’ll get 5% back on the first $1,500 in combined purchases for the selected categories. After that, you’ll receive 1% cash back for all other purchases. That means you can earn a maximum of $75 in bonus cash back on these categories per quarter or up to $300 per year. And on top of that, there’s no limit on how much you can earn at 1%.

5% Cashback Bonus® Calendar:

January to March 2024: Restaurants and drug stores (no longer available for enrollment)
April to June 2024: Gas stations and electric vehicle charging stations, home improvement stores and public transit (no longer available for enrollment)
July to September 2024: Grocery stores and Walmart (ends September 30, 2024)
October to December 2024: Amazon.com and Target

Eligible Amazon purchases include those made through the Amazon.com checkout, like digital downloads, Amazon Fresh orders, Amazon Local Deals, Amazon Prime subscriptions and items sold by third-party merchants through Amazon.com marketplace. It also includes purchases made in-store at Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh. However, purchases at Whole Foods in-store or online do not qualify for this promotion.

Purchases made in-store or online at Target are eligible for this promotion, except for purchases from individual merchants and standalone stores within physical Target locations, which can include purchases from Target Optical and Target Photo.

There are four Discover cards that offer 5% cash back on a rotating schedule of categories, including the Discover it Cash Back, the Discover Student Cash Back cards, and the NHL® Discover it® Credit Card.

Plus, if you’re a new cardholder looking to make the most of your rewards, the Cashback Match feature of the Discover it® cash back credit cards can provide a significant advantage. By matching your cash back earnings within the first year, you can quickly accumulate additional rewards.
