The 2025 refreshes of Amex Platinum and Chase Sapphire Reserve premium cards

The year 2025 seems to be the biggest year for the major credit card revamps. Two of the most popular travel credit cards, the American Express Platinum* and Chase Sapphire Reserve*, are getting major 2025 upgrades to attract experience-focused travelers.
American Express is planning to refresh both its Platinum and Business Platinum cards later this year, adding benefits that are highly valued by cardmembers. New perks include three Centurion Lounges opening in Newark, Salt Lake City, and Tokyo, bringing the number of Centurion Lounges to 32.
Amex is also expanding its dining benefits with the acquisition of reservation platform Tock, adding 7,000 new experiences to the existing 20,000+ Resy offerings.
The company didn’t share details of the Business Platinum Card® from American Express refresh, except to say benefits would remain focused on helping business growth.
Chase, meanwhile, relaunched its Sapphire Reserve card on June 23 with changed earning rates and redemption options, a revamped package of perks, new statement credits, and more.
As part of the Chase Sapphire Reserve® summer changes, new cardholders can earn 100,000 bonus points plus a $500 Chase Travel℠ promo credit after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.
Here is a quick overview of what the card will offer going forward.

New redemption option:
The Chase Sapphire Reserve will roll out a new points accelerator called Points Boost in place of the old 1.5X travel boost. With Points Boost, Chase Sapphire Reserve points will worth up to 2X apiece when redeemed on premium airline tickets or hotels through Chase Travel. For all other bookings on the Chase Travel portal, such as activities and cruises, points will only be worth 1 cent each.
Along with these new features and credits, the card will still offer most of its old benefits going forward.
Of course, there’s a price to pay for all the new benefits. The annual fee for the Chase Sapphire Reserve will increase to $795, with a $195 annual fee for authorized user cards. Current cardmembers and those who applied before June 23, 2025 will have access to these new benefits and features starting October 26, 2025. While their annual fee will be adjusted to $795 on their next anniversary date following October 26, 2025.
With these upgrades, both Amex and Chase are betting on loyal consumers who value premium travel experiences, especially when those privileges extend beyond the airport. Be guided by your spending habits, travel goals and whether the new benefits are worth the weighty annual fees when choosing the most suitable card for you.
