When looking for a new credit card, most people want one that will give them the most rewards. But with so many different types of rewards credit cards to choose from, how can folks know which one is going to deliver the most bang for their buck?

One of the most popular choices in rewards credit cards is the rotating rewards cash back credit card. With this card, you can typically earn up to five percent back on purchases in select categories that change every three months. The purchase categories tend to correspond with the seasons, according to what people are mostly likely to spend on during that time of year.

For example, in the spring, many cash back rewards cards will offer five percent back on home improvement and garden superstore purchases, as many people are embarking on projects around the house and yard. In the summer, gas station purchases and hotel stays may be on the rewards menu, as people go on road trips and spend the night at a hotel or motel. In the fall and early winter, online shopping and department store charges may earn bonus rewards, to accommodate holiday shoppers.

What you need to know about cash back rewards

There are a few things to keep in mind when using a rotating rewards cash back credit card. The first thing is that some of these kinds of cards require you to sign up for the bonus cash back each quarter. If you don’t do this, you’ll only get the standard one or two percent cash back for your purchases, even if they’re in the reward category.

The second thing to know is that these rewards are usually capped. The standard ceiling for these five percent bonus categories is $75 in cash back per quarter, on a maximum of $1,500 spent. After you’ve hit that $1,500 limit, you’ll continue to earn one percent back on all purchases, or possibly two percent, depending on the card.

When you spend in a variety of categories and want to get the most cash back possible, a rotating category credit card can offer the most high-value credit card rewards, as long as you know how to use it.
