When applying for a store credit card there are many things that should be taken into consideration. There are usually some incentives when it comes to store credit cards that may be in the form of a discount, rewards, or financing options. However, before you consider a store credit card like Costco you should be sure to compare cards that are not co-branded by a particular store. Many of these alternative cards offer comparable rewards.

Store Card versus Traditional

When comparing store cards to traditional cards you have to consider that most store cards can only be used at that particular store. Another consideration is that they usually have a high APR so they are not the sort of card you want to carry a balance on. Always read the fine print as some store cards do not even allow cardholders a grace period, which is the time you have to carry a certain balance before it begins accruing interest. When there is a grace period it is usually about three weeks or so after the end of the billing cycle. Traditional credit cards almost always have a grace period.

The Costco Credit card is a unique example of a store credit card because they only have a Visa card. There is no basic store card for this brand. They only accept Visa cards there as part of their store policy. But there may be better options if you do your research. Many traditional Visa cards have rotating categories that can offer up to 5% back in rewards.

Risks of Store Cards

A traditional credit card can have many benefits over a store card. They usually offer better interest rates and rewards and they can be used anywhere, which is good for debt consolidation. Having many outstanding payments can cause you to run the risk of missing a payment. This in turn can wreak havoc on your credit score and cause the interest rates on all your cards to skyrocket.

Also, many store cards come with low limits. This can negatively affect your credit score because it can cause your credit utilization to go above 30%. If you get a store card and it only has a limit of $500 and you spend $250 this is already 50% of the credit utilization on this card. Never mind if you spend more or carry a balance what this could do to your credit score.

It is better to use a card with a higher limit to consolidate your debt and to keep your credit utilization in check. Ultimately store credit cards can cause your credit score trouble in a number of ways.
