In today’s world cash is no longer king. It is plastic that rules commerce. There are obvious benefits to using cards and almost everyone has them. Consumers are enticed on a daily basis into applying for store cards to get the benefits that come along with them like rewards, a discount or special financing. It is almost impossible to enter a major retailer and not see signs advertising their particular card. Some store cards are worth having while others may be better left out of your wallet like the Lowe’s card.

This service finds the credit cards which suit your situation best. However, only card issuers decide whether you'll be approved or not for a credit card.

The Basics

When wondering whether or not to apply for certain store cards there may be things to take into consideration that you may not have known. Many store cards have commonalities among them. And although there can be perks to having a store card, there are also some of the downsides. Store cards tend to have high APR’s combined with low limits. Also store card seekers should be aware of deferred interest which is practiced in what is usually referred to as “special financing.” So be sure to be aware of what you are signing up for.

Read the Fine Print

Some store cards may also be misleading in their advertisement. The Lowes credit card for instance advertises 5% off “every day.” However, that doesn’t mean you are going to get an ongoing discount. There is an asterisk placed next to “every day” and if you read the fine print this is just referencing the fact that this discount can be used on items you usually buy, but the discount is only good on the initial purchase when signing up for the card.

In addition, when applying for the Lowes card you must make a choice between the 5% discount or special financing. Although 5% isn’t an extreme discount it is considered a better option than the special financing simply because the financing usually has deferred interest. This means that if you do not pay the balance in full within the agreed upon timeframe you can end up having to pay interest on the full amount back to the original date of purchase. With the APR on store cards being notoriously high this could be a significant amount.

Low Limits

As you shop you may be cajoled by a sales associate or a cashier might throw a last-minute pitch about getting their store card. If you did decide to get a card because of a discount offered I would advise paying off the card as soon as you make the purchase as the card probably has a low limit. Carrying a balance on a card with a low limit can impact your credit score because one of the factors in determining your credit score is credit utilization. If your credit utilization is more than 30% this can negatively impact your score. So if you carry a $300 balance on a $500 card for even a month, this could have an effect. In other words, the discount may not be worth it.
