One of today's best marketplace's is online. They have everything you need, and great deals as well (just take a look at Amazon or Best Buy). Sometimes you may wonder if a store card is worth having. They may seem to come with great benefits but you should become familiar with the caveats that store cards come with. Taking all things into consideration, you should be asking yourself whether or not certain credit cards should be in your digital wallet.

Rewards

Store cards usually boast rewards of some kind. But are those rewards always worth it? Always read the fine print as some store cards don't even give a grace period on purchases and many have a high interest rate or annual fee.

The Amazon credit card for instance has a reward rate of 5% on purchases from them for Prime members. So if you are a Prime member and plan on paying the balance in full right away, the savings may be worth it. Although there is no annual fee for the card, but having a Prime membership will run $99 for the year. One cannot reap the 5% statement credit without being a Prime member.

However, a card you already have may have similar rewards, as many rewards cards have rotating categories that reward 5% cash back in certain categories of shopping. In addition, from time to time other cards run cross promotions with online retailers.

Special Financing

If you are thinking about using the special financing option, there are some things you should know. For example, the Amazon store card provides six months of financing on any purchase of $149 or more, and 12 months of financing if you spend $599 or more. This special financing is interest-free for the stated period of time. However, be aware of the pitfalls that come with special financing and weigh your options.

What you may not know is that if you do not pay off the balance in full within the allotted period of time you will be charged interest for the entire promotional period back to the date of the original purchase. With an APR upwards of 26% this could result in a hefty sum. Instead of the special financing option consider a card with a promotional 0% APR on purchases, this way if you do not pay the balance in full you will not be hit with a huge interest payment.

Deciding

Another thing to consider is that many store cards usually do not have as a high a limit as you may be used to. A card with a low limit can cause your credit utilization to be higher than 30% which can have a negative impact on your credit score. So whether you are buying a big screen television or something else, always think about the bigger picture.
