Credit Cards for Star Alliance Frequent Flyers
When airline alliances are concerned, you expect a certain variety of opportunities. Even the most loyal fans of United, American or Delta may want to migrate if the conditions suddenly become intolerable or if flights are cheaper. Star Alliance gives you an easiness of choice among its many members. If travels are what you live for, then you probably collect miles for the sake of almost free flights. And a co-branded credit card just multiplies your gains adding miles accrued from your everyday purchases.
However, a co-branded credit card is a limit in itself. Usually you gain 2X or 3X miles for the purchases with one specific airline and 1X for all the rest. But if you show some versatility in the airline selection, then you lose numerous opportunities to earn on those other airline flights.
And 1 mile per dollar is scant comparing to what you can collect using other means of earning. Notably, general travel credit cards won’t direct you towards one airline and will allow you to earn more without bother. Such cards have a flexible earning structure, giving you around 2X miles for dollar on all purchases. Unless you spend more than 50% of your earnings on flights, using this card is a foolproof strategy to make best use of your expenditures. And if you get a card with 0% intro APR, no annual fee or other fees (there are cards that combine all of that!) you’ll have the best case scenario whatever happens in your life. Give it some thought and with a cool head go ahead and choose a credit card that will take you further, cheaper.
