Discover 5% Cash Back Categories 2020 Uncovered
Traditionally, in November, Discover announces its new 5% cash back categories for the next year. This year was no exception.
We would remind you that some Discover it® cash back credit cards offer their holders a 5% cashback bonus in certain groups of locations on up to $1,500 per quarter. These locations rotate once a quarter and should be activated each time in the online account. All other purchases made with the Discover it® Cash Back, the Discover it® Balance Transfer, the Discover it® Student Cash Back and the NHL® Discover it® bring users unlimited 1% cashback.
So what awaits Discover cardholders next year? Did new categories appear, or did everything remain unchanged? Here is the Discover 5 percent cash back calendar 2020:
- January 1 – March 31, 2020: Grocery Stores (except Target and Walmart), Walgreens and CVS.
- April 1 – June 30, 2020: Gas Stations, Uber, Lyft and Wholesale Clubs.
- July 1 – September 30, 2020: Restaurants and PayPal.
- October 1 – December 31, 2020: Amazon.com, Target.com and Walmart.com.
Compared to the Discover 5% cash back calendar of 2019, the new one, on the one hand, remained very similar in general and retained the previous categories. On the other hand, Discover still managed to please its customers with several new locations. For example, in addition to grocery stores, the first quarter now offers 5% back at Walgreens and CVS pharmacies. And wholesale clubs were added to the second quarter category with gas stations, Uber and Lyft.
As always, each category becomes available for activation 2 months before it gets valid. Thus, you can already activate the first category of the upcoming year in your Discover online account. The second quarter can be activated starting February 1, the third quarter – starting May 1, and the fourth quarter – starting August 1.
