I’m remodeling a kitchen and look for any possible opportunity to save. I’m planning to do most of the work myself, which will save me quite a chunk of money. Now I thought I could save on materials using a card with rewards. Can you recommend one? I’ll be buying everything at small suppliers, don’t think a store card will do. Thanks.

You can apply for a regular credit card that is not co-branded with any retailer. There are a lot of credit cards with different rewards programs. For example, you may like the Discover it® Miles credit card as it allows redemptions for cash or travel statement credits. Cash redemptions are most convenient, since cash can be used for virtually anything. The Miles card will allow you to earn 1.5 miles on all your purchases, which is basically 1.5% back. All miles you’ve earned first year will be matched at the end of the year (if you are a new cardmember). Thus, if you earn 30,000 miles, you get 60,000 miles. The card has another good feature you will like – 0% intro APR on purchases. You won’t pay interest for 14 months, then your ongoing interest rate will be 13.74% – 24.74% Variable. The card does not charge an annual fee or foreign transaction fees.

Yes, the Pilot RV card is not a credit card. It is a charge card, that means that you have to pay off the balance each month anyway. If you don’t do it, you’ll face high fees and may lose the card. You get a credit limit each month, so you can make purchases for this amount and then pay off. If you are diligent with your payments, then this card is ok for you, but if you are not sure, then there’s no reason to get the card.
