There are so many great credit cards that offer cash back, it’s difficult to narrow it down to just one. But you’re right that another type of card is probably a better choice. Store credit cards often don’t give the best rewards, especially when it comes to cash back. Look for a card that has cash back on a rotating basis, like the Chase Freedom or Discover card. Each quarter, you’ll earn 5% cash back on all purchases in a designated category, such as movie theaters, home and garden shops, or department stores. You’ll get 1% cash back on all other purchases, year-round. This is a great way to get savings that change with the seasons, and maximize your cash back opportunities. Be aware that there is a limit, however, on how much cash back you can get at the bonus 5% back rate. Generally, you will be limited to $75 per quarter in bonus cash back rewards. The 1% back, however, is unlimited.

Not to worry. One late credit card payment generally will not sink your credit score too badly. It’s when payments are missed completely, or repeatedly late, that it can start to affect your credit score.
