Choosing a credit card

There are a few different basic types of credit cards you can consider for your shopping needs. One is a general purpose, unsecured credit card such as a Chase Freedom, Citi Simplicity, or Discover it card. These cards can be used at any merchant who accepts the issuing network of the card, such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover. This kind of card gives you a lot of flexibility, as it can be used virtually anywhere.

Another kind of card is a retail card, or store card, that can be used only in the store that issues it. This could be a Bass Pro shop, a Gap or Banana Republic, or Costco. These cards usually offer new applicants a percentage off their first purchase, such as 15% off when they apply for the card at checkout, as well as ongoing sale and discount opportunities. They also often have high APRs and very few benefits outside of saving on that initial purchase.

A third type of card is the co-branded card, which is sort of a blend of the store card and the general purchase credit card. These cards have the store brand printed on them, and are affiliated with the brand, but can be used anywhere you shop, provided the merchant accepts the issuing network. They will usually offer rewards based on making purchases at the co-branded store, and you will be able to redeem your rewards only through that particular merchant.

All three of these types of cards can offer cardholders great chances to save on purchases and earn rewards. However, some are more flexible than others, and some will pay off better in the long run than others. Things to consider when deciding on a card include what level your credit is, how often you plan to use the card, how many other credit cards you have already, and what type of rewards you’d like to earn.

As a general rule, your credit limit is based on your creditworthiness; credit issuers look at your credit score in order to determine what credit limit to award you.
