When considering a new credit card there are many things to think about. The major focus is put on rewards these days and many people may apply for a store card based on that. However, there are many other areas to look at before signing that application. Things may not always be what they seem. You may be better off using a traditional credit card whether you are shopping at a big box retailer like BJ’s or your local gas station. There are many reasons to choose bank cards that are branded by a major payment network like Visa or MasterCard as opposed to smaller merchant specific cards.

Interest Rates and Grace Periods

There are some key things you want to think about when considering applying for or using store cards. Most have high interest rates between 19.99% and 24.99%. Some have varying rates based on your credit. However, the high side is on the expensive end. For example, the APR on the BJs credit card can be up to 25.24%. Never carry a balance on a store card. Because not only are they notorious for high interest rates, but some may not offer grace periods. This means that you begin to be charged interest from the day you purchase the item. Most traditional bank cards offer a grace period which may be several days to several weeks after you purchase the item or receive the statement.

Low Limits

Many store cards also have low limits which may sound good because you may think you can only spend so much, right? Wrong. A low limit makes it easy to increase your credit utilization. Which ideally would be 30% or below. Your credit utilization is how much you use on a certain credit card in comparison to the line of credit you have on that card. So if you get a card with a $1,000 limit and carry a balance of $500. This brings your credit utilization for that card up to 50% which is already above the recommended limit. Anytime this happens it can negatively impact your credit score. So imagine if you spent $900, this would bring your credit utilization up to 90% which would be even worse for your credit score. Also keep in mind that credit utilization is very different than debt-to-credit ratio, which is your total amount of debt in comparison to your total amount of credit. Even if you have an ultimate credit line of $50,000 spread between several cards, the fact that you have high rate of credit utilization on one single card is detrimental to your credit health. So before you jump at the chance to earn rewards at BJs, just be sure about everything you could be getting yourself into.
