When choosing a credit card you need to consider your options. Just like when you are shopping for a particular item you don’t just walk into any store and pay any price. You do research. You figure out what you want in a certain product and you look for something that fits your criteria and is within a certain price range. If you don’t shop for products like that, then why would you choose a credit card that way. Just because you shop at a particular store, like Dillard’s for instance, does not mean you should be using their card.

Shop Around

When doing a research on a particular store card you should be aware of several things. You should always know what the APR is and if there is a grace period on new purchases. You should also find out if that particular store has a customer loyalty program that can allow you to earn rewards without using their particular credit card.

Loyalty Programs Double Rewards

When you have a particular store card in mind and explore their reward program don’t just take it for face value. Dig a little deeper. For example, take a look at the reward rate of the Dillard’s credit card. It offers two reward points for every dollar spent on purchases charged on the credit card at the store. When you reach 1,500 points you can receive a $10 reward certificate. Not bad as far as store cards go. However, that breaks down to a reward rate of 1.3%. There are reward cards that give 1.5% to 2% on all purchases no matter where you shop. Not to mention, rewards from traditional credit cards have many more options for redemption.

Co-Branded Cards

Another thing to take into consideration when considering a store branded card is that many of them offer two options: a basic store card and a co-branded card. One of the problems with this is you usually can’t choose which one you are applying for. So you may think you are applying for a card that is co-branded with a major payment network like Visa or MasterCard and you may end up with a basic store card that can only be used at that particular store.

Special Financing

Also, always be aware of anything labeled “special financing,” as many store cards use this term. This method of financing a purchase usually has deferred interest, which means that if you do not pay the full amount by the end of the agreed upon timeframe you will actually be charged interest back to the original date of purchase. This is more of a penalty than a reward.

Special financing at Dillard's is done through their credit card. So you would need credit that is worthy of receiving their card. Which I would expect to be fair credit in the least. However, I would avoid any kind of special financing. It is usually associated with hefty fees and penalties. Many store cards advertise "no interest" or "interest free" ...

Well, it is a good thing you don't plan on carrying a balance because as we know store credit cards are notorious for high interest rates. As far as rewards go, cardholders get two points per dollar spent at the store. This sounds good but when we do the math it's a different story. If you need 1,500 points to get a $10 gift certificate at two points per ...

Although store cards tend to have a large window of the types of credit they accept, I would not recommend it. If you have not done anything since applying for the previous cards you were denied for, it would be doubtful your credit has improved much. If you have recently been denied for other store cards, I would doubt this case would be any different. ...
