With the popularity of online retail shopping growing and becoming the norm for many shoppers, it is no surprise that almost every retailer has their own credit card. Cash is no longer king, but plastic is definitely in the running for the throne. The question is which cards to apply for and which to avoid. Sometimes the decision is not as simple as you think and there may be more things to consider than you originally thought. Especially when it comes to store cards like the Kmart store card for example. Is it worth getting?

Not Such Interesting Rates

Store cards are generally plagued with things to watch out for. Although they advertise beckoning sign-up incentives, you could take the bait and get hooked on the line for a lot more than you bargained for. For instance, the Kmart credit card advertises 50% of your next purchase in big bold letters. However, in the fine print you can see that the reward is only up to $50 in the form of a statement credit. With the kinds of interest rates that store cards are known to carry, if you do not immediately pay this entire bill you would easily forgo any discount, rewards, or savings you may have thought you would get. Most store cards have interest rates upwards of 19.99%, with some cards going as high as a 29.99% interest rate.

Not So Special Financing

At any given time store cards like the Kmart one, usually have several options for financing purchases that claim no interest. These offers usually revolve around large purchases such as jewelry, appliances, furniture, mattresses and any other kinds of purchases that require committing to a large lump sum of money. The kinds of things that cost a lot of money. The fact is you could actually pay a huge amount of interest when you see the phrases, no interest, interest free or special financing.

Double Your Rewards

Many store cards also advertise points. However, in many cases you do not need the store credit card to get them. For example, at the Kmart store you do not need their credit card to earn points. Points are available to all members of their loyalty program called Shop Your Way. If you use their loyalty program in conjunction with a traditional rewards-reaping credit card, you can probably see better rewards and more of a benefit than if you were to use their store branded card. If you use a traditional rewards card with a store loyalty program it could be like doubling your rewards.

I would use caution whenever you see a no-interest option on a credit card. This is very different from a 0% APR promotional period on a traditional credit card. When the promotional period ends on a traditional credit card you will begin being charged interest on whatever your balance is at that time. When a no-interest period ends on a store card you will ...
