Store Cards vs. Co-Branded Cards

There are two types of store credit cards we often see, including a basic store card and one branded with a popular payment network like Visa or MasterCard. The Target REDcard for example, has a basic store card and one with the MasterCard logo. Usually there is no choice as to which one you are going to apply for. The card with the MC or Visa logo is usually a better option as basic store cards generally have a higher APR than one that is co-branded by Visa or MasterCard. Not to mention a card with the MasterCard or Visa logo can be used anywhere whereas a store card can only be used at that store. However, when it comes to store cards what usually happens is you would fill out an application, and receive a card based on your creditworthiness. The better your credit score the more likely you to get approved for the branded card.

Rewards

When it comes to rewards keep in mind that discounts and rewards can be easily negated by high interest rates. The fact that store cards usually come with high APRs means that you should never carry a balance on them. If you plan on carrying a balance it would be a better idea to sign up for a 0% APR credit card. That would far outweigh any menial discount or reward offered.

Although it can be tempting to get a card like the REDcard because of the benefits in connection with online retail shopping. At target.com the card provides cardholders with free shipping. But, shipping is free for everyone with a purchase over $25 dollars, which is a nominal amount to spend at any online retailer.

Other Options

If you already have a substantial balance on a card that is collecting high interest, consider a balance transfer. This is an especially good idea if you have used the special financing option that many store cards offer. These kinds of cards practice deferred interest. Which basically means that it’s not interest free unless you pay off the entire balance within the interest free period. If you do not, you will find yourself hit with a substantial charge for interest payments on the full amount all the way back to the original date of purchase.
