Be a Loyal Member

A major consideration behind getting a store card is you may be interested in the rewards you may get. However, consider that many major retailers have loyalty programs. Loyalty programs allow members to be rewarded without actually using the store credit card. For instance, as a My Best Buy member you can earn 1 point for every dollar spent, when you reach 250 points you will get a $5 rewards certificate. With this membership you can also get free shipping from BestBuy.com and access to special sales and offers. You cannot be denied membership due to a low credit score and there is no credit check required. If you use a loyalty program membership in conjunction with a reward reaping credit card, you may be able to increase what you can earn.

Financing Options May Not Be So Special

Many store cards offer an option for “Special Financing”. For example, the Best Buy credit card offers 12 months financing on purchases of $399 and up. However, what you may not know is this option isn’t actually interest free. It actually has deferred interest. This means that if you do not pay the balance in full within the allotted time period you will be charged interest back to the date of purchase. With an APR of 25.49% on a purchase of upwards of $400 being charged an entire year worth of interest is going to be a significant amount. A better option for financing could be a credit card with a 0% APR. If you can get a card with rewards as well that would be even better.

The Bottom Line

Depending on the store, the item, and the reasoning, it may be worthwhile. However, consider many store cards come with low limits and high APR’s. Some store cards don’t even provide a grace period which means you will begin paying those high interest rates as soon as you purchase the items. So always consider all your options and be sure you are aware of everything you sign up for by reading the terms and conditions.
