If you often shop at one particular store, having that store credit card can be logical. Indeed, store credit cards like Sears credit card, Walmart card or Best Buy credit card may give you access to discounts or special financing options but don’t apply for them without comparing with regular credit cards. A store credit card can seem a best option until you compare it with other rewards credit cards. Lower interest rate, flexible rewards and worldwide credit card acceptance is what store credit cards cannot offer.

What are store credit cards about?

All store credit cards are more or less alike nowadays. They offer access to additional discounts, allow you to earn rewards or use no interest financing on select merchandise. They can be used only at particular stores (for example Sears credit card can only be used at Sears and Walmart card is only for Walmart purchases), unless they are Visa or MasterCard cards. They usually come with no annual fee but their interest rates are one of the highest. While you think your store credit card is a good way to shop at your favourite store, you can make unnecessary purchases and end up paying a fortune in interest. The store credit cards are for people with established credit who can plan their spendings ahead and responsible enough to pay off the card balance during no interest period or every month.

Regular credit card or a store credit card?

When your credit is not perfect or when you start building your credit, a store credit card is not the best option. Firstly, because most credit cards won’t be issued to people with poor credit and secondly, high interest rates won’t forgive a single missed payment racking up the fees.

Regular credit cards are not that demanding. They won’t charge you high interest fees and may forgive you your first late payment. They will reward you for any purchase you make at any store. And they won’t tie you to a particular store, you can even take it with you when travel abroad. If your credit is fair or lower, such additional benefits like free credit score tracker will help you manage your finances and improve your credit history.
